Dr. Hernan Bazan is a surgeon-scientist, entrepreneur, and the CEO and Co-founder of South Rampart Pharma, Inc. He concurrently serves as the Chief of the Dept. of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery for the Sutter Health (Sutter West Bay Medical Group) San Francisco, CA.
Dr. Bazan co-founded South Rampart Pharma, Inc. to address the critical, unmet societal need for safer, non-addictive pain relief—a need he witnessed firsthand in his post-operative surgical patients. As CEO, he spearheads the company's scientific strategy, clinical development, and co-leads the
fundraising efforts.
He has been the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on two NIH/NINDS STTR (small business) grants, including a prestigious NIH Fast Track grant, supporting the pre-clinical and formulation development of the company's lead non-opioid candidate, SRP-001. Under his leadership, the company has successfully completed Phase 1 clinical trials, paving the way for Phase 2 studies in acute and neuropathic pain.
A prolific innovator, Dr. Bazan is the co-inventor of over a dozen issued or pending patents and the author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including foundational papers on the SRP compound library. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the 2024 NIH HEAL Director’s Trailblazer Award.
Dr. Bazan earned his B.S. in Molecular Biology from Vanderbilt University. He was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Research Scholar at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during medical school. He received his M.D. from Georgetown University, completed his General Surgery Residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and finished his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Yale University.
